• 12,000 years ago: hunter-gatherers lived in area
• 5,000 years ago: farmers lived on banks of the rivers
• 2,500 years ago: became a trade center
• 300 BC: invaded by Greeks
• 100 BC: invaded by Romans – trade in grain, olives and 31
• 518 AD: city abandoned following earthquake

Rediscovery of Site

• 1706: French explorer believed the site was the remains of a 32
• 19th century: a map was made of the site
• 1982: a complete 33 was made

Excavation

• The 34 was the first place to be excavated
• A number of 35 were discovered
• Evidence of a 36 industry was found
