It is increasingly common for people to fill their homes with many types of household appliances. I believe this tendency can be both beneficial and harmful, depending on one’s perspective.

On the one hand, excessive purchasing of domestic appliances can be environmentally detrimental. The growing consumer demand has led to a surge in new products and models being constantly introduced to the market. Consequently, some manufacturers over-exploit the earth's finite natural resources to keep up with consumerism, and dispose of improperly treated toxic waste into the environment. Beyond that, many consumers purchase unnecessary household items in vain attempt to keep up with what is currently trendy. Therefore, redundant goods are quite often quickly discarded, ultimately ending up in large landfills, where they often take thousands of years to degrade and, while doing so, release toxic chemicals into the surrounding soil. 

On the other hand, this trend has significantly improved business profitability and people’s lives. Regarding the former, applicance manufacturers have thrived in the recent decades, thanks to the booming demand for more effective household tools. Growing businesses create job opportunities and contribute to government funding for infrastructure and social welfare projects. A further benefit is that devices such as dish washers or robot vacuums help improve the well-being of modern families. Such appliances can handle the most time-consuming household chores, thus giving family members more quality time with one another, and lowering the risk of domestic conflicts over dividing responsibilities between spouses.

In conclusion, the trend towards owning more electrical devices is beneficial for both manufacturers and consumers, due to increased business activities and improved living standards. However, it is a negative phenomenon for the environment with the over exploitation of resources and contamination of natural ecosystems.
