Opinions are divided on whether teachers exert a greater influence on children's intellectual and social development once they begin their formal education. In my opinion, both parents and teachers are both responsible for educating children and ensuring they become well-rounded citizens.
On the one hand, teachers have a substantial impact on how children absorb academic skills by virtue of their expertise and classroom management. Regarding the former, teachers are trained to accommodate individual learning styles, as they are equipped with effective teaching methods that address students' academic needs and challenges. Through engaging and interactive activities, students are motivated to explore and discover their interests, fostering a lifelong passion for learning. Moreover, teachers facilitate the development of intellectual skills through a collaborative learning environment. For example, critical thinking and teamwork can be acquired through peer learning and group discussions. Such experiences contribute to students’ overall growth alongside the acquisition of academic knowledge.
However, social behaviors in early childhood are mostly modeled on parents' interactions with both their children and communities. Role modeling impacts children’s social development thanks to consistent guidance through daily interactions in the home and outside of school settings. For instance, polite communication and respectful interactions could serve as an example for children to naturally follow. In addition, only parents can guide children through situations that may not be taught or encountered at school, thereby bringing about opportunities for children to better understand themselves and their place in society. For instance, children learn how to resolve conflicts with peers or siblings through practicing respectful communication. As a result, the emotional intelligence to interact appropriately in any context, for the most part, is derived from a healthy upbringing.
In conclusion, I agree that teachers have a more significant influence on young people’s intellectual development, but parents do so when it comes to shaping their children's social skills. (319 words)
